We`re proud to share the latest community initiative happening at The Cape! This year, a group of five residents of The Cape (also members of The Cape Community Farm) and three from outside The Cape, volunteered as growers for the TreeProject `s autumn growing season. The TreeProject a not-for-profit organisation, trains volunteers to raise indigenous trees, shrubs, and grasses to support landowners in re vegetating their land.
Since December 2023, our dedicated growers have been nurturing seedlings for the Fish Creek Landcare group. After five months of tender care at The Cape Community Farm, a total of 2,600 seedlings were raised. These seedlings were collected on April 26th and are now on their way to new homes, thanks to a group of 15 farmers in Fish Creek committed to land regeneration and creating wildlife corridors.
By planting indigenous flora, farmers contribute to preserving and enriching local biodiversity, creating vital habitats and food sources for native wildlife. These plants not only benefit insects, birds, and small mammals but also restore degraded areas, improve soil quality, enhance water retention, and create a picturesque landscape for all to enjoy.
This project illustrates The Cape`s commitment to sustainable living and community engagement, showcasing residents` dedication to environmental sustainability and positive contributions to our environment.

We`re excited to share the progress of Project KOALA, a community led initiative dedicated to restoring and enhancing the habitat for Cape Paterson`s native koalas and wildlife. In recognition of the impacts of urban development, the project was launched in 2021, focusing on the rare and genetically distinct Strzelecki Koala.
Recent DNA analysis has confirmed that our local koalas are a unique subspecies, vital for the survival of koalas in Victoria and South Australia. Through innovative planting methods like the Miyawaki technique, we`ve created lush mini-forests with native species like the Coastal Manna Gum—koalas` favourite!
In 2021, a group of residents planted 12 mini-forests and over the past three years, these plots have been looked after and nurtured. With great excitement, the local koala population has been spotted visiting the newly enriched areas.
In April this year, phase 2 was launched expanding our habitat restoration efforts with over 60 residents including families coming together to plant an additional six mini-forests. These will be nurtured by volunteer custodians over the course of two to three years until they are well established.
Overall, we`ve planted over 1,000 indigenous plants, enhancing biodiversity and strengthening our local ecosystem. Over the forthcoming years, we are looking forward to seeing our native wildlife enjoy these new surroundings and the Koala’s visiting.

Spotlight on nature`s elegance at The Cape 🌿 A glimpse of the graceful bird with snowy white plumage, a distinctive spoon-shaped black bill, and elegant black legs, often mistaken for an Australian Ibis. While commonly found across eastern and northern Australia, it’s a vulnerable species in Victoria. Recently, a rare sighting of a small flock gracefully foraging the marshy edges of The Cape`s wetlands and the coastal bushland near Wilson’s Rd. A reminder of the precious wildlife we cherish and protect in our community🕊️
