Not just one house, but a whole street of smart and innovative sustainable homes will be open to the public at The Cape for National Sustainable House Day, on Sunday 17th September. To celebrate, The Cape team will be hosting a street party to celebrate, with live music, free barista made coffee and refreshments, Q&A with energy efficiency experts, builders and designers, free rides along the Bunurong Coastal Drive in Tesla long range electric cars, tours of Victoria’s most innovative community garden, and much more. Come and enjoy the event with us at Periwinkle Place, Cape Paterson, Sunday 17th September, 10am – 4pm, and download a program for the day here. Sustainable House Day is a growing national event, with a record number of over 180 new and existing homes opening up across Australia, as more families get on board improving their homes and opening their doors to share their experiences. While Australian homes average between 2 and 4 stars nationally, visitors to The Cape will be able to tour a number of homes that are averaging over 8 star energy efficiency. There is also Victoria’s first 10-star home by The Sociable Weaver, and free downloadable house designs. The Cape Director Brendan Condon said today, “Our Cape homes show the latest in design and smart technology, including heat pumps and electric cars. Energy prices have skyrocketed over the past three years, and the average family pays more than $3,000 per year. With better design and energy efficient construction by trained and skilled builders, homeowners can reduce bills to a few hundred dollars per year, and have a home that is comfortable year round, warm in Winter and cool in Summer with minimal heating and cooling.” “The ATA is a not-for-profit association that organises Sustainable House Day precisely so people in cities and towns across Australia can walk into someone’s home and learn the practical steps to building, renovating or improving their own home. They anticipate a record 20,000 people will inspect homes this year to gather ideas that could save them thousands of dollars, and the Australian economy millions.” Sustainable House Day will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 17th September.
