Sustainable House Day returned to The Cape for the third year in a row on Sunday 17th September, and what a successful day it was! 2017 marked 16 years of Sustainable House Day, a national event organised by the Alternative Technology Association which allows home owners across Australia to open their doors to the public, and provide an insight into some of Australia’s most environmentally progressive homes. It offers a chance to learn from your peers, gather ideas and inspiration which can then be utilised in one’s own home. These homes are not only environmentally friendly, but also cheaper to run and more comfortable to live in as oppose to your average Australian family home. This year was the most successful in the history of the event, with a total of 205 homes involved. The Cape had five homes open on display for the day, with around 900 visitors to The Cape and up to 29,000 nationwide in attendance. The Alternative Technology Association is a not-for-profit organisation which was established in 1980 to provide expert, independent advice on sustainable solutions for the home. It sets a principle for sustainable living and seeks to enable, represent and inspire people to implement sustainability into all areas of their everyday life. To find out more about this fantastic organisation, you can read more here. At The Cape, the atmosphere was very much like a festival. We were fortunate to have Tesla electric vehicles onsite for the day, thanks to New Gen Solar and Gippsland Solar, both of which were in great demand. Local musician Janie Gordon hit all the right notes with a live music performance - you can take a listen to some of her work here. Respected energy efficiency expert, Richard Keech also provided an excellent presentation on the top tips for achieving an energy efficient home. The Cape’s homes only formed a small part of the many fascinating homes which were open for display on Sustainable House Day. Profiles on each home remain on the Sustainable House Day website, so if you get the opportunity take a look. With this year’s Sustainable House Day all wrapped up, planning is already underway for next year’s event, with plenty of new ideas up our sleeve, but for now we wish to thank those who supported our event this year, contributing to making the day such a success.
